Sideways LP – a groundbreaking definition of what we call the Romanian sound.
The Romanian scene has offered countless exceptional producers and numerous highly-entertaining DJs in the last decade. Few can be considered as talented and successful, especially when it comes to both categories, as are the members of SIT (Sideways Invisibility Theory), Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia.
Two artists with an extensive musical knowledge, as both of them have made their studies in this area, Cristi and Vlad are transmitting what they’ve learned perfectly in their sound, combining classical with electronic, providing the right groove that has its artistic perspective as well.
When it comes to their joint musical project, we can definitely say that SIT has been one of the most beloved groups our public has listened to. Productions, DJ sets or live sessions, just name it, and these two prodigies will not stop to amaze you.
Now they return with their first ever LP, “Sideways”, which is a groundbreaking definition of what we call the Romanian sound. Consisting of three parts that include several tracks that were heavily searched for in the past years by music lovers, this release is truly a great piece of art of the Amphia label, which Cristi and Vlad founded together.
A-side. Soft bassline, accompanied by some elusive vocals
The first part, consisting of 6 tracks, is opened by “Assemble” on the A-side, a quirky intro that prepares the listener of the complex journey that he is going to take part of. High-pitched instruments and a downtempo percussion are the ingredients that make this small piece of symphony so special. Coming also on the A-side is “Permissive”, a greatly build track for a warm-up or early main session. Due to the soft bassline, accompanied by some elusive vocals and a few uplifting drops, we could say that this one lives up to its’ name, delivering exactly the sensation of asking and receiving permission to do something, the construction of the sound itself is transmitting this very accurately.
B-side. A great rhythm with authentic kicks
Turning to the B-side, we will find two highly appreciated tracks of the duo. Firstly, “Brooklyn” is a genuinely assembled piece of notes that is just perfect for sunny after hour sessions. A great example of the defining sound that SIT has, giving the listener the chance to give almost any interpretation to it and leaving an open end, this track quickly became a big favorite of the general public, mostly because of its’ unique vibe. On the other hand, “Bootcamp” isn’t any less good, being an excellent choice at almost any time of a party. Giving a great rhythm with authentic kicks and bassline, including hundreds of small but mandatory details which are the reason why every SIT release is so complex and enjoyable, this one can revitalize the whole crowd at any moment.
C-side & D-side. The same story from different perspectives
C-side “Mandatory” is a bit more darkish, giving a sensation of continuous seeking, but in a very enjoyable way as the linearity of its’ beat keeps our ears at full capacity. Last on this part, but not least is “Come Around”, coming on the D-side, probably the most played track of this first part. Delivering a composition with an engaging air, the deepness of this track is beyond measures, thanks to a very detailed elaboration of these two masterminds. Every side is offering us a different story, all of them connected between them. Or perhaps, the same story from different perspectives.
E-side. Something truly special
This continues also on the second part, also consisting of 6 tracks, where we discover other versions of their ingenuity. The E-side first unveils “Seller’s Walk”, which is astonishing when it comes to its’ relaxing potential. Perfectly matched analog instruments with digital kicks led to the creation of something truly special, a walk in the park. Still on the E-side is “Hallo”, a long favorite of at least the Romanian public, as this track was searched and hunted by most of the musical community around here, leaving many of us speechless. Inducing the listener in an alert state, the melody of this one is to keep you above the line even when you cannot feel your legs anymore, but will drop you down now and then so it doesn’t make you rush or overdose, another marvelous interpretation of simple feelings.
F-side & G-side. Perfect shape, perfect groove and perfect rhythm
Moving on, we have “Feel that way” on the F-side, a powerful sound with an aggressive bassline and trippy vocals. The revelation of at least one Sunday afternoon, as Cristi Cons smashed every soul between his decks and the waves of the Black Sea with this gem at Sunwaves 16, playing alongside Alexandra. A similar and even older situation happened with “Step by Step” of the G-side, when it was played by Cezar on a fall morning. And believe us, it’s really the G spot of the release, as this one might be one of the most appropriate synonyms of what we call the Romanian genre. Perfect shape, perfect groove and perfect rhythm was used to fabricate this one and by definition, it just cannot get old and there’s no moment when it wouldn’t fit the room.
H-side. A storm followed by a moody state
The H-side has a spectacular turn, preparing us of what will follow on the last part. First of all, “Furtuna” (“Storm” in Romanian) is a more eclectic and pretentious type of sound, one that fully expresses its title with the apparently chaotic, but totally controlled flood of inspirational strains. The second part finishes with a trip hop bridge towards the third part, called “Moody”. Obviously, there is a correlation in the outcome of this track, as in life a storm is usually followed by a moody state of the people.
I-side & J-side. A genuine feeling of the chaos a participant feels after tens of hours of partying
The closing of this masterpiece has come on the shoulder of 3 other tracks. A successful trilogy inside another successful trilogy, these tracks complete one each other to deliver a product apart. On the I-side we will find “Angels”, another bomb that was devoured by the public from the first play. Supported by Rhadoo or Raresh in moments full of energy, or even when closing, this track has a serious approach of not letting the listener take a breath of pause, just the way we like. The last side of the LP is J, consisting of two tracks that are very different, but still connected. “Reconnect” is leaving an impression of having an urge need to profit of every last second of the remaining dance. With a bit more uplifting groove, the sound of this one will make you go through a thousand states before reaching the destination. Which would be the “Shadow”, a perfect illustration and metaphor in the same time between the ending of the LP and the ending of an amazing party or festival. Although every sound is placed carefully and in a specific place, the track provides a genuine feeling of the chaos a participant feels after tens of hours of partying.
After such an incredible release that definitely has its place in the history of electronic music, many would ask if there’s a way to top this by SIT. We are confident that what these two extraordinary musicians have offered us is just the beginning and we are ready to embrace whatever magic will flow out of them next. Until then, we will abuse the Sideways LP.
